When asking about the situation in question, you will probably notice even slight differences in a person's movements and gestures. In a sense, you become your own human lie detector.
Although body language can work to your advantage and make you a great success, it can be a huge disadvantage as well. The largest mistake is not paying attention to your non-verbal cues, or having the ability to cue in on the non-verbal gestures of others. People will read your body language and often judge you regardless of the things that you talk about and contribute within a business setting. Without knowing it, you could appear non-approachable and non-caring when that is not who you are at all. This is all based on your non-verbal cues.
If you are not tuned into other people's body language, this can also lead to trouble. You may not know a whole lot of what is going on. You need to be able to sense people's frustrations, anger and concerns. Many people in a business situation will talk about things that they normally wouldn't to impress someone. May people aren't truthful about how they feel when it comes to big decisions. You may be relying on a certain outcome, only based on what was said. If things don't go your way you may be less disappointed if you are able to read the uneasy body language that is going on around you at the time.
People who are great at reading body language, can be nice and caring verbally, but purposefully upset people by using body language. This makes their activities hard to pinpoint when it comes time that you are ready to complain about how they treat you. It is less concrete than words. You know the person. They are sweet and nice one way, but cold and passive aggressive in another. We are a world that tends to focus on the verbal side of people. That really is only the tip of the iceberg. Most of the messages that people send are through body language. If we become more sensitive to this we can become more sensitive in our business environment. Imagine what it would be like if your whole business team were as aware of body language as they were of talking. I guess it could be peace or chaos.
What it comes down to in the business world, it is body language that can make or break you. It can help you succeed, get a promotion, be liked by your peers, and help you to accomplish your goals. If you are not in tune with your body language and that of those around you, it can work against you. The lack of knowledge in this area can really hold you back professionally and personally. Many people consider the knowledge of body language a business necessity.
