COPING WITH DISABILITIES
What are the reasons why many of us have difficulties in almost everything: hearing, seeing, talking and moving. Their handicap are real. But some of us are making fun of them. They are being ridiculed and laughed at. That is the problem of some of us who like to disregard their feeling because we believed that we are perfect in everything. Disabled persons have the same need all of us have. They needed to be loved, want to learn, tried to share something to others and wanted to grow and experience the same world we lived in. They have the same longing for close relationship with other human being because they are people, too.
What happened to them is not of their own choosing. No one want to have a difficulty in their lives but they can not change the fate that befall them. Each of us has our own role to being perfect and being in difficulty, the only difference is how to manage to be strong.
But there are some disabled persons who change direction with their own lives. They changed the attitude about themselves. They realized that to be more useful, they have to go out from their shell and communicate to other people achieving and learning and finding freedom. Their disability make them a better person. They survived and they are in the road to feel the life to its fullest.
There are some disabled persons who wanted to live independently. They wanted to control their own lives. They learned to make their own decision and cared themselves physically with pleasure. Making life better is a calling. It is very hard but it taught them to teach others who have similar physical problem.
What you can do for them? Don't try to take away their feeling. They have the same right to fall, fail, suffer, to cry and despair. Treat them with respect. Don't limit your understanding to their condition. Don't use them for fun. They still have potentials to achieve and contribute things by using their abilities. Their disabilities is not a total failure. If you want to help them do so.
Seeing them what you will do? Do you laugh at them or pity or help them?
In cities, they were there standing on the street. A blind person with guitar in hand and a harmonica attached to his string instrument played a popular song together using his hand and mouth. You can see in his face the difficulties in life being blind. He stroke his guitar amazingly in accompaniment from the sound of the harmonica. He played the piece well, with feeling giving the audience with pleasure around him. They give him coins. Some give paper money more in excess of his performance.
To have a disability is not the end of everything. Many of them are doing what they are not suppose to do to earn a living and give pleasure to everyone not because of having a handicap but because it give him satisfaction. They do things to make them useful. There were many blind persons who knew how to read a braille system. Many knows how to walk alone in the street by using a cane as support. We wonder how they made it even without the use of his eyes. It is really amazing and unbelievable. They are gifted to do things despite their handicap because they determined to do it and wanted to learn more.
