Is Death Penalty acceptable in the modern society?
Death penalty has exist from the ancient times or we may say since the human are on the earth, both the 'civilized' and 'uncivilized' societies carried out the executions of some of the most dangerous people on earth. But were they all too dangerous? Did they all do the act under the same circumstances? Is this barbaric approach acceptable anymore in the modern society?
Many different methods had been followed to put some of the heinous criminals to their end. In past beheading by sword, guillotine, hanging the person to death and in some cases stoning to death, were some of the methods that were used in order to provide capital punishment. Now-a-days some of those methods have been terminated and instead some new methods have been employed, such as Electrocution, Lethal injections and Gas chambers. However, hanging the person to death is by far the most common method.
Although a handsome number of countries had done away with their system of Capital punishment, still in many parts of the countries it is carried out. All of the Europe under the article 2 of EU is prohibited from carrying out capital punishment. Hence on 13th august 1955 last executions were carried out in UK in Liverpool and Manchester. Some parts of Latin America had also quit the system. They believe that by punishing the criminal, the victim in no way can be brought back to this world. Some people believe as if lifetime incarceration is more painful. Their argument seems logical as if the criminal is subjected to the capital punishment it would be nothing different than an eye for an eye approach. Moreover we all know we are human, mistakes could be made at the hands of anyone of us. This means that there would be some cases where the person would be subjected to death when he/she was innocent.
"You have the wrong person"
These were the last words of Edward Nathaniel, a person believed to be the murderer of a policeman.
On the other hand China, Singapore, Pakistan, India and many other countries still believe that capital punishment should be carried out. These countries believe that their recidivism rate has gone low due to the practice of death penalty. China being one of the most populated countries executes people at a decreasing rate, in 1995 China executed 7 people, in 1996 four more people were executed, in 1997 the rate drops to one. So the statistics seems to favor their arguments. Singapore on the hand is very much strict about their laws, they just hang people even in the cases when they are involved in the drug trafficking. Their people support such law because they believe drug trafficking is mass murdering. Since they believe that it is a lesson for other people, question arises why should a person be hanged only to teach lessons to others?
Time seems to be rushing out, another era will elapse, but it seems that humans can't find any other alternative. They should try to understand that we who punish those persons are doing the same thing 'legally' what he/she had done 'illegally'. An international committee should be setup to find some other useful deterrent. Rehabilitation centers should be formed. Circumstances should be studied under which such criminal was born inside a normal person.
However, the bottom line is that, though it seems barbaric and out of date, humans had not been able to find some other effective way that could keep the criminals away from the crimes. Hence death penalty should be carried out till humans could find some other alternative.
