Ritual, Nature And An Open Heart

Connecting To Nature Through Ritual

I define a ritual as an action one does purpose, that holds specific intent. Rituals can be simple or complex. Drinking a cup of tea with awareness every morning is an example of a simple ritual. Taking part in a ceremony where there are lots of different steps is an example of a complex one. Ritual as a healing tool is as effective as the amount of energy one is able to put into it. Provided you are able to remain focussed and attentive while performing a ritual, benefits will be gained.

Devising rituals of your own can be a good way to get in touch with a deeper part of yourself. It can also help you to get in touch with nature, which in turn will help you to be more in touch with your own natural cycles. Nature is a great aid in the creation of ritual. A lot of ancient cultures were well aware of this and practised rituals to remain in harmony with the world around them. Living closer to the earth without the aid of modern technologies, those from ancient times were much more aware of nature. They had to be for their survival.

The sad thing is that many people in the modern world, do not see the connection between the resources that they consume and the earth that provides them. These resources are derived from the earth, and yet how many people consciously think about it as they roam through the super market isles. Just how did this food appear on these shelves? How many different forms of life played a part in getting that food where it is today? What did I have to do, to be able to purchase this food? And who played a part in assisting me to gain the money that is needed in the exchange?

It is important to entertain these ideas. If we use our intelligence we will see that the earth provides us with what we need to survive (hence why many refer to her as a ¡°mother). So we should try our uttermost to receive what we are given gratefully. We should also perform actions that don't destroy or damage the resources that are needed for survival. Already a lot of damage has been done, but there are ways that one can help right that damage. The physically active way is to be involved in activist activities. It is also to make the right choices as a consumer, to purchase those things less likely to damage the precious earth.

On a subtle level of action we can also perform rituals that can help heal the wounds that have been afflicted upon our earth. I say that rituals are a subtle level of action, because their effects may be difficult to perceive. Even if one does not believe that thoughts and intent help to shape the reality around them, one can still see ritual as beneficial in that it puts one in the right state of mind in which to physically act. I will give an example of a ritual that can be done to show how the ritual also fosters a positive state of mind.

We will make the beach the location of this example r
itual. Our intent for the ritual is to help clean and purify the water in an energetic sense. We can also think of it as purifying ourselves and the water (blood) within us. As is without so is within. Draw a circle within the sand that is big enough for you to sit within, make sure you are close to the waters edge. This circle represents a state of wholeness and unity, and it is also a protective sphere. Before you step into the circle you can smudge yourself with some sage or some other sort of incense. This helps to purify your energy. When you step into the circle feel as if you are stepping into a sacred space and maintain a sense of mindfulness. Sit down facing the ocean. Smile towards the water and generate a feeling of care towards the waves lapping against the shore. Imagine that within your heart centre there is an ocean. Radiate well wishes towards this ocean within. Attempt to open yourself to wide advances of sea, feel yourself expanding until you feel there is no separation between you and the ocean. Offer prayers and well wishes to the ocean and all forms of life that exist within it. Affirm to yourself and the ocean that you will do all in your power to avoid committing acts that lead to harm. You understand that just as you want your blood to be pure and clean, so does the great mother want her waters to be non-polluted. If you wish you can charge an item from the shore such as a pebble or a shell with your loving intent and well wishes, then cast it into the ocean. Sea water is naturally a cleaner and purifier - but if too much harmful things are put in it, it is unable to perform its function properly. When you swim within the water, remember that the mother gives a great gift of nurturance and revitalisation. To end this ritual you can say words of gratitude to all of life, and pray for all those who will come in contact with the ocean. If each person could be touched by the oceans beauty they would naturally seek to stay away from those things that harm her. Step out of the circle and with your feet smudge the sand to remove all physical evidence of their being a circle. Make sure you state your intent that the ritual space be closed. This is done to remind oneself of the nature of impermanence and to ensure the space remains sacred. Once the physical boundary is removed it can not be abused by any passers by as there is no link to the individual who performed the ritual.

The above ritual is just a simple example of what can be done. Depending on one's spiritual or religious inclinations, there are many different ways to perform a ritual. For instance I did not mention any deities within this ritual so I could keep it non-specific. But deities can be a great aid especially if you have a connection with one. Well wishes and intents are good as starting points, and can help an individual to open their heart, which eventually leads to a more kinder and loving disposition. Such a disposition can aid one in contentment, peace and positive mind states. This will in turn radiate out towards all things. All forms of life benefit from developing such mind states.

Do you know a ritual that can benefit to our health?

Hi,

That depends on what exactly your wanting to do with benefit to health? The best way ritual can aid one in health is by giving inspiration to lead one to the neccesary lifestyle changes, that fascilitate good health.

If one doesn't follow through with the right lifestyle choices then doing a ritual isn't going to help much, its like you give the universe one signal saying, "yeah I want this to happen" but then your actions dont back it up, and so the universe wont deliver in that sense.

Any sort of general prayer of some sort, can be good, if you have particular symbols you associate with good health, can use them as a point of focus while you pray to whatever you consider to be the "highest".

Simple things like holding a gratitude for nature and spending time in nature, which in itself has a healing and revitalising energy.

If having a positive outlook in life considered as a healthy benefit to ourselves then this is the kind of what I'm looking for.

Are you talking about law of attraction? I don't think the universe can influence us to what we may have become.

Okay so if your seeking a positive outlook you'll need to attempt to not get caught up in or trapped to negative mind states that arise in you, and also seek to cultivate positive mind states, this is pretty much the way to go about it, though it is easier said then done!

The problem with negative mind states is that they usually overcome us and take ourselves over before we even realise, they are sometimes very slippery and not so easy to realise until its too late and your fully involved in the negativity.

So placing the focus initially on creating positive mind states is probably a good first step, but be aware this will only ever be really effective if you can eventually not succomb to negative states - and really, its our efforts in everyday life where we see where we are really at, as soon as something undesirable happens, or we loose something important, or someone cuts us off whilst driving etc, thats when we are put to the test.

A simple practice to do say before you go to sleep would be to confess every night to yourself what negative actions you may of done, this is a purification technique, and I dont know what your exact religious pursuasion is, but if its God, for example, you can confess to God. The negative actions we do, play a part in feeding our negative mind states, so if we can really feel remorse for what we have done, we will lighten the load in our minds, and if we also make vows to try and do better the next day we give ourselves hope.

Next I would say pick a particular area of self-impovement you want to work on, such as say you want to be more kind to people, spend a week or so really foccusing on being as kind as possible in your interactions with others, and see how you go. Doing positive actions, will increase our positive mindset in life.

Im not really talking about the law of attraction its more I guess at a level of practicality. To be healthy one has to have a commitment to choosing lifestyle choices that support health, I guess I feel its important to emphasise this? And also one thing Ive really learnt is to place emphasis on action, this has been my major downfall, so I'd like to help other people see the value in it.

What more could I ask? Reading your response reminds me of my Religious Education teacher having a long lecture yet she still manages to make the class enthusiastically listen to her. Same with the way you presented your answer it seems that you have the mastery of the field.

Actually I want to achieve positive perspective in life since having this aura can promote tranquility to us and even the success that we aspire. How can I achieve such goal when I'm so negative in life? But not until I read your response. It gives me the starting point on how to have a new outlook in life in just a simple way.

Although I'm having a negative outlook in life it doesn't mean that I'm also doing negative actions. No. Do you think it's normal when your thoughts are negative but you deeds are the other way around?

Okay to explain the relation between negative thoughts and negative actions.

I am speaking about things that have happened in the past, that you have been involved in that has contributed to you having the negative patterns you have in your mind today.

Whatever we do, and whatever happens to us, when we are not so aware we will react, and over time if we continually react in a particular way we can form patterns that are hard to break.

So when we have a pattern inside of us that leads to us suffering as a result of that pattern we call that pattern a negative one.

So if your mind has negative patterns in it, it doesnt neccesarily mean you are acting "wrongly" in the present. It just means that for ever reason in the past, particular patterns were created in your mind which have become a part of your self identity, so because you identify with them they are hard to change.

If you are focussing your attention on doing deeds you consider to be "good", then you will be creating patterns in your mind that are "positive" and will in the future help you to have more of a positive self-identity.

The difficult part is the "now". Because as humans we have a mixture of negative and positive behaviour patterns within our minds. Indeed we define these habbits of positive and negative usually on whether they cause us or others around us suffering or joy/happiness etc.

Now, a negative outlook, is actually an action of the mind, but because it is more subtle, it is difficult to control. It is easier to stop our physical forms from doing a harmful action, but to stop our minds from falling into negative feelings or views, we need to be able to work more with our subtle senses.

This takes a lot of training to do, but the good thing is if you focus on making your actions positive, even if your mind may feel disturbed, upset, worried, depressed etc, you are at least creating for yourself a somewhat better future, but to create for yourself an even better future, you also have to learn to tame the mind.

Is your negative out look a result of fear? resentment? hate? jealousy? etc, examine the feelings and emotions that are a part of your negative outlook.

To really change your internal state you have to really believe, have strong faith and dedication that you are able to, and have the ability too.

I can give you some examples from my own life of things I am working with currently:

I find it very difficult to do physical tasks such as cleaning, etc, even if I do them in my mind I feel very negative about it. I may feel upset, or annoyed, or aggitatted that Im having to do it etc..

Now, if I keep on cleaning regardless I am challenging my lack of wanting to clean, but I also need to observe and watch my minds reactions, when my mind feels upset about cleaning, I can try and move my mind away from the upset feeling by foccusing on something else that is more positive, such as, that if i live in a clean environment i will feel more healthy and fresh, and try and generate a positive feeling in that way, if i keep at it, overtime i can replace the negative feelings with positive ones...

Does that explain it better?

you aptly describe the grandeur of the Earth and I would like to add how awesome is God to create this beautiful universe and its surroundings. I like the way you explain rituals and how Mother Earth can help us achieve a positive mindset. Thanks
